Traffic Trading

You probably couldn't care less that I really like the fact that here in Blogger I can easily add AdSense to my blog, but it is really easy to do. I've removed it just now, because I think I'd rather have people reading my blog because it was interesting than worry about whether I can make ten cents by having a click through from you, and I personally don't like advertising. I have an intense detest for surreptitious methods used by marketers that have manipulated me in the past. Now that I myself am a recovering Internet Marketing Addict I have a great deal more regard for this kind of thing, although I have to admit I'm still partially on the fence when it comes to this traffic trading stuff.

Traffic trading if you haven't heard about it is the idea that you can get money from a website by driving traffic to it using the usual IM methods then sell that traffic to the highest bidder, typically Google. Well, it is all well and good if you are actually adding value, but if you're just trading on ignorance then that's awful.

I like the idea that if you are able to connect a willing participant from each side, a buyer and a seller, then you're essentially providing a valuable service and for that there should be a reward for taking the risk of paying out the costs including the time spent arranging it all. This is pretty much what eBay did by providing a place for people to trade and they did exceptionally well. Google too have seemed to hit the nail fairly squarely by branding themselves exceptionally well. It remains to be seen if I am capable of doing the same but I certainly hope that to be true.
